Advancements in RNAi Biofungicides for Tree Disease Management

Fungal diseases pose a significant threat to trees, reducing forest productivity and biodiversity. Traditional solutions, such as fungicides, often harm the environment. However, researchers from the the Czech Republic (EXTEMIT-K, G level team) and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and are exploring RNA interference (RNAi) as an innovative and eco-friendly alternative.

RNAi is a natural biological process where double-stranded RNA silences specific genes, making it a promising tool to combat forest fungal diseases. In a recent review, Ramesh Vetukuri and colleagues examined the potential of RNAi-based biofungicides. Their study evaluated delivery methods, environmental impact, regulatory considerations, cost-effectiveness, public acceptance, and the prospects of RNAi products in forest protection.

“By using RNAi-based biofungicides, we can selectively target fungal pathogens while sparing non-target species. This precision minimizes ecological disruption and provides a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fungicides,” explains Prof. Vetukuri.

A Promising Approach for Forest Health

RNAi offers the advantage of leveraging genomic data from fungal outbreaks to develop species-specific treatments. Advances in delivery systems, such as nanoparticle carriers and sprayable formulations, are making RNAi applications increasingly viable for forest management.

However, challenges remain. Researchers emphasize the need for a deeper understanding of RNAi's environmental persistence and its impact on other species.

“With further development, this method could help maintain forest health for future generations,” concludes Dr. Amit Roy, another contributor to the study CZU.

This review paper highlights RNAi's potential as a sustainable and precise tool to manage fungal pathogens and safeguard forest ecosystems.
